A Guide To Small Business Marketing

Updated: Dec 19, 2022

Building a brand from scratch is definitely not an easy task. You need to consider many aspects like your target audience and overall aesthetic to create a brand image that best resonates with your products and services.

These aspects not only play a vital role in the planning stages but also cement your company’s image as a whole.

If you’ve got nothing to work off of but a business idea, or want to reinvent your existing brand, here are some things to guide you through the daunting process.

What is Branding?

Branding isn’t just about a distinctive or recognizable logo and image that lets you stand out in a saturated market. It’s how prospective and current customers perceive your company, products, and services wherever they interact or engage with your business.

For a better understanding, you can think of it this way; we all have personal brands that set us apart from each other. It includes our name, face, style, and how we interact with others. It’s things that create a lasting impression on anyone we come in contact with.

Likewise, companies also have names, products, and logos that add to their uniqueness and reputation. To build a cohesive brand, you need constant maintenance and consistency that extends to all parts of your company. But first, you need to start with what image of the brand do you want to promote?

Find what best resonates with your target audience

If you’re trying to cater your services and brand image to a specific demographic, you need to do your research and find out what they like, what existing brands they interact with, and how you can use this information to your advantage.

You can also monitor and research your rivals’ branding and build something similar or go the opposite route and create your unique campaigns and image. Social media platforms will come in handy for these sneaky searches.

You can look up your competitors’ profiles, see what they’re selling, how they’re promoting their products, and what most consumers are responding to. This in-depth search will give you an idea of the market, your rivals, and your target audience.

Create a brand image based on your findings

Once you’ve collected all the viable information, you need to shift your focus on creating your branding and come up with a name, logo, font, color palette, slogan, story, and personality.

If your target audience is much younger, you can stick to brighter colors, bubbly fonts, and an overall joyous look.

Simple, sophisticated, and soft colors, fonts, and logos will work best for an older audience. However, your branding also relies on the kind of products you’re selling.
